Saint Laurentius Parish Celebrates 125 Years

This year of 2007 marks the 125th Anniversary of the establishment of Saint Laurentius Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Church which was established in 1882, exists as the oldest Polish Church within the city of Philadelphia. Located in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia, which at one time consisted of a large Polonia population, and still has many Polish American residents, has been located on Memphis and Berks (Vienna) Streets since the church building was built in 1889. The parish continues to thrive since then. Although it has open its doors to Catholics other than Polish, St. Laurentius still celebrates masses both in Polish and English on Sunday. It has a strong school, providing the only Catholic educational institution in that part and neighborhood of the city. On October 14, 2007, the same date as Philadelphia's Pulaski Day Parade, the parish will commence in its anniversary celebration. A mass will be held with His Eminence Cardinal Justin Rigali, followed by a Banquet at Romano's Caterers. The banquet will host Polka and Variety music by Music Box Band, and performance by The Polish Intercollegiate Club (P.K.M. Polish Folk Dancers.)
